Throwback- EC 2016

As we moves towards the EC i Georgia, we thought it would be interesting to take a look ten years back – same tournament, same country – but same fighters?

Some fighters are still going strong, others have retired since 2016 EC. But the main difference the weight-categories – at the time four of them.

Men’s division was divided into -65, -75, -85 and +85kg. Women’s division: -50, -55, -60 and +60kg. from our point of view, today’s weight classes are far better adapted than they were at this time.

Champion of 2016 -65 kg Andrei Zinchenko / Georgia – will be one of the top favorites this year as well. Impressive many years at the top level. Georgi Lotarov / Bulgaria runner up, in a category with 19 fighters. Full Draw

The lightest category for women, was The lightest women’s category was won by Violeta Litovska / Bulgaria, with Justina Sisaite / Lithuania in second place. If we not are mistaken this was a one time only appearance on the EC Shinkyokushin podium for both of them. Full Draw

Middleweight men had an incredibly strong line up with 28 fighters from all strong nations included. Salahat Hasanov / Azerbaijan came out on top, this was the year before he would win the World Championship Full Draw

Women middleweight with Zsófia Szabó / Hungary met in the final Isis Pinilla / Spain – both featured from previous EC, strong finalists in the -55 kg category with 15 fighters Full Draw

The men’s light-heavyweight class brought together the 2015 EC champions, -80 Marius Ilas Romania and the champion from -90 kg Valdemaras Gudauskas / Lithuania. Not many can move up the weight classes like Marius Ilas did – and still fight at the top. Full Draw. 25 fighters.

In the women’s -60 kg, there was supposed to be a purely Lithuanian showdown, but the final between Inga Mikštaitė and Gabija Gudeliauskaite was not held, and Mikštaitė stands as the winner in the somewhat surprisingly thin class of 9 athletes. Full Draw.

In the men’s heaviest class, +85 kg, there was an incredibly strong starting field – something the top four tells us. And as is well known, at the top of it all, Valeri Dimitrov Bulgaria – but Maciej Mazur right behind in a 24-fighter class. Full Draw.

In the women’s heaviest class, which was +60 kg, Csenge Szepesi / Hungary won for the fourth time in a row. The final against Nora Vaznelyte / Lithuania was a repeat of the previous year. 17 fighters in the category Full Draw.

For the record, we are including the results from the Junior classes as well as Kata.
