This is just a tough – and probably it’s not the first time you have heard about it. Recently we saw athletes who were ready for the 2nd edition of KCC. The supposedly best Fighters from around the world. What about the KCC Kata league?

With the background of promoting to be Budo Karate, this, the “KCC Kata” would be quite natural to add. We can see a change in the way (world) tournaments and championships are being build. More and more we see various moves being made to specialize and sharpen everything further.

So, we could easily made 8 top Kata practitioners to a KCC event. And one could use this tactically in the KCC event. Kumite or Kata, the athletes must rest in between the battles to peak their performance on the Tatami. The audience will be served Karate action all the time, while Kata practitioners and Kumite practitioners will lean on each other. Fighters will rest while Kata “works” and vice versa.

And isn’t it always the case that at championships with fighting – there is often a Kata demo? So why not see Kata in tournament form instead?

OK, we can hear some of the usual arguments why Kumite sell inn better than Kata. “It’s no spectacular knock-out’s” Thar’s right, but still we can see the raising number in Kata tournaments. We have also heard that the women’s division in Kumite miss those knock-out’s – compared to the men’s division. If so, why the shin-protectors and less fight time?

We like to ask questions, mostly to hear other point of views. In today’s society, we get the feeling that arguments and points lie at the extremes – farthest from the “opponent”. Most likely, the answer lies somewhat more in the middle.

The purpose of new initiatives, such as tournament concepts, new formats and promotions – is for the “industry” to grow. The bottom line in all growth is inclusion, and without the breadth, the top will not exist on the same secure foundation. It’s like building a pyramid.

For all that we know, it could be in progress as we speak, but we are not surprised if it’s not either. What do you think, should we have Karate Champions og the Champions – Kata?
